HISTORY OF SPPHAWA

SPPHAWA Inc is a non-for-profit association, founded and registered in 2006 with the primarily aim to promote the Standardbred as a successful and versatile horse that can excel in selected disciplines outside of racing. Joining the National Standardbred Horse Association of Australia (SHAA) also gave us the avenue to set up a Partbred Standardbred registry to further promote the ridden performances of the breed.

Showing of Standardbreds in WA was well and truly entrenched before the evolving of SPPHAWA with the WASBA Show Committee forming in 2000 that has paved the way with some wonderful achievements by both personnel and horses that will always be fondly remembered. It was during this time that our first State Championships was born and we are delighted to see that we are fast approaching a milestone of 25 years in a few short years.

With only a very small hard-working committee of volunteers, we are extremely proud to be recognised far and wide on the equine scene for the professionalism of each and every event we choose to run in a season. The Dual Code platform is one such success that we took on board to introduce the “other racing code” the Thoroughbreds to our major events calendar (State Championships, Dual Code Spectacular & OTTWA Classics) that have been huge successes.

Each year we endeavour to hold Open Breed events of some description to meet the current needs of what the average rider/horse combination is looking for. These events become our major fund raisers for that season along with membership subscriptions that enables us to not only host our major events but also keep costs down and provide trophies and cash awards thorough the showing season for our end of year awards.
